Yesterday was pretty awesome day because I got to go see the amazing Mo Kenney with Joel Plaskett and The Emergency in concert. And I got to take my niece to her first ever concert! It was an awesome-tastic experience! My boyfriend wasn’t too keen based on the tunes I had played for him but even though I had never seen these performers live before I knew they were going to be good and wow! They did not disappoint!
Mo Kenney is young and quirky. Her Twitter bio is simply, “I write songs and play them for humans.” She speaks in this deep monotone kind of voice between songs, so droll, sarcastic, and really very fun and funny. Then the music starts and her voice changes in song to something so soft and beautiful. She seems to effortlessly bend her guitar to do her bidding, as if it’s an extension of herself, another arm that has always been attached to her body. I knew she was going to be good, but she is awesome!
I have been hearing about Joel Plaskett and The Emergency for a lot of years now and I have always wanted to get to see them sometime. Last night was my chance and it won’t be the last time, that is for sure! Even if they never come back to my town again I will definitely score tickets to see them in Moncton or Fredericton. Joel Plaskett is a songwriter, a poet, a musician, a singer, and one hell of a performer. His guitar solos had the audience whooping and clapping. He is so much fun! I was prepared to be entertained by world class singing and song writing, but I didn’t expect him to be so absolutely ON! The only comparison I can draw is that it reminded me of seeing The Tragically Hip, when Gord Downie goes off on one of his poetry riffs and brings the audience to its knees. Oh yeah, seeing Joel Plaskett is like that! Only different. He is completely unique in my mind. His dancing is … spectacular! Really, you had to be there, I don’t think you’ll ever find a video that captures it well enough. It is something you need to see in person. And I am so glad that I did! And I will definitely do it again!
Today’s affirmation is …
